Il Turco in Italia

Gioachino Rossini

Opera buffa in two acts / Libretto by Felice Romani after the original by Caterino Mazzolà / In Italian with German Surtitles

Premiere: 04/03/2016

Synopsis

The Turkish Prince Selim wishes to discover the joys of Italian life. Not far from Naples he becomes acquainted with the coquettish Fiorilla and falls in love with her. But this idyll is short-lived because Selim’s ex-wife, Fiorilla’s husband plus her lover, all appear on the scene. Scandals and emotional outbursts abound, much to the amusement of the poet Prosdocimo. He was searching for inspiration for his new libretto for a comic opera and suddenly decides to participate himself in the human story.

Gioachino Rossini is considered to be one of the most important operatic composers of bel canto. »Il Turco in Italia« can hardly even be compared with any of Rossini’s other works. In fact he even spices it up with the typical ingredients of opera buffa (confusion, intrigues, mistaken identity, happy endings), thus creating a cynical perspective of love driven to the extreme. Rossini seizes every musical possibility for buffonesque ensemble playing whilst simultaneously revealing sensitive moments of great lyrical depth.

For the opening of the 1814 autumn season at La Scala in Milan, Rossini was entrusted with the task of creating a comic opera. Following the first performance on 14th August of that year the work was not performed for many years until Maria Callas helped the Two Act piece enjoy a new popularity. In the Salzburg State Theatre this »comedy of errors«, directed by Marco Dott, is staged once again. The Mozarteum Orchestra is conducted by Adrian Kelly.

Reviews
