La Bohème

Giacomo Puccini

In Italian with German and English Surtitles

Premiere: 02/26/2017

Synopsis

»I want to make the world cry«. There is no doubt that Giacomo Pucchini succeeded in this: with »La Bohème« he created one of the most passionate and stirring love stories in operatic literature.

Mimi and Rodolfo fell in love with each other on their very first encounter. Together with Rodolfo’s artist friends, Marcello, Schaunard and Colline, they enjoy a happy Christmas evening in Café Momus when finally Musetta allows her older admirer to sit for Marcello.  And yet the joy of the two couples was short-lived. Whilst, just a short time later, Marcello was dying of love for the coquettish Musetta, Rudolfo gives the almost fainting Mimi to a rich inheritor-to-be, saying that he personally could not help as he was not able to take care of her medical needs.  Whilst the four men in her house start some lively festive dancing, and try to ignore the cold and their hunger, Mimi tries one last time to find Rodolfo...

In »La Bohème« Puccini portrays the youthful game of romantic survival of Parisian Bohemians in the mid 19th Century rather like Henri Murger’s novel  »Scenes from Bohemian Life«. Pucchini’s unforgettable music tells the story of fragile tenderness, glowing love, and of art, freedom and independence.

After the success of »Manon Lescaut« Puccini (1858-1924) achieved his definitive artistic breakthrough. With works such as »Tosca«, »Madame Butterfly« and »Turandot« Pucchini succeeded in following Giuseppe Verdi and taking his place at the pinnacle of Italian Opera.

Andreas Gergen directs the touching story using the artistic video skills of Momme Hinrichs and Torge Moller as »fettFilm«, and Regina Schill’s costume design. Under the baton of Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra delivers Puccini’s most sumptuous delicacy.

Duration: ca. 2 hours 30 mins / incl. intermission

Reviews

Puccini goes House-Musik, ausgerechnet in Salzburg! Ein verdienter Erfolg für das Landestheater.“

Bayern 2

„Zum vorletzten Mal verantwortet die außerordentliche Musikdirektorin Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla eine Salzburger Opernpremiere. Neuerlich ist es ein Ereignis. […]
