Synopsis

A young artist stands at a turning point of his life—the path before him leads to freedom with his beloved. To look back spells suicide.  Matthew Aucoin describes this moment of truth as the way forward for his dramatic cantata »Orphic Moment«. This decisive split-second in time reveals the entire dilemma of Orpheus’ character.  In large measure, the opening of this operatic evening is in harmony with Gluck’s »Orfeo ed Euridice«. Thus the work of the two composers becomes intertwined through the myth of the eternal pair Orpheus and Euridike. Matthew Aucoin becomes a wonder boy under the direction of the American composer. The New York Times called him the Great Hope of Opera and the Wall Street Journal     dubbed him the »new Leonard Bernstein«. The 26 year-old poet and conductor has discovered his own compositional voice. »Orphic Moment« would be the first of his works to be produced in Europe. The works of Christoph Willibad Gluck would serve as the interface from Barock to the Classical. He was himself one of the greatest opera stars of the 18th Century. His Azione drammatica arose from the desire to reform Italian opera.

The mastermind of the »Orfeo« project and the actor playing the title role is the countertenor Anthony Roth Costanza who, along with Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla and Matthew Aucoin, was nominated for the 2016 International Opera Awards.

Matthew Aucoin (*1990) studied at Harvard University and the Juillard School.  As Conductor he has close links with the Metropolitan Opera, his works having been performed in Boston and Chicago. Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714-1787) is judged to be one of the most important opera composers of the 18th century and the pre-classical period.

Douglas Fitch began his creative career with his family’s puppet theatre. He studied at Harvard University and worked together with Peter Sellers and Robert Wilson.  As Director he worked, among other roles, at the Opera Houses of Los Angeles and Santa Fe.

Reviews
