Salzburg Festival and Theatre Children's Choir

The Salzburg Festival and Theatre Children's Choir is involved in major concert and opera productions of the Salzburg State Theatre and the Salzburg Festival. Under the direction of Wolfgang Götz, the choir offers children the opportunity to experience the joy of music while also gaining insights into working in a professional theatre environment. Younger participants are welcomed into preparatory groups, where singing is taught in a playful, age-appropriate way.

At the Salzburg State Theatre, the chorus performs not only in major opera productions (e.g. Carmen 2015, Hansel and Gretel 2016, La Bohème 2017) but also in drama (Shakespeare in the Park since 2014) and ballet (Bach ’n’ Drums 2011). In addition, the children’s choir regularly presents its own productions such as Brundibár (2013), Les Choristes (2014), and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (2017).

At the Salzburg Festival, the chorus performs alongside soloists such as Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, and Piotr Beczala, collaborating with conductors including Riccardo Muti, Christian Thielemann, and Simon Rattle. In addition, the chorus has participated in various television and film productions and appeared at the Thalia Theatre Hamburg (2013), the German Bundestag, and the Deutsche Oper Berlin (2016).

History of the Salzburg Festival and Theatre Children’s Choir

Two important pillars of cultural youth development in Salzburg came together when the children’s choirs of the Salzburg State Theatre and the Salzburg Festival merged at the beginning of the 2010/2011 season. Wolfgang Götz, who had led the Salzburg Festival Children’s Choir since 2008, became the musical director of the combined choir and has held the position of head of studies at the Salzburg State Theatre since that season.
