400 Years of Theatre Next to The MirabellgarDens – why celebrate such an anniversary?

Every visit to the Salzburg State Theatre should be extraordinary and rewarding. Yet it is equally extraordinary and rewarding that an institution has remained present in one place for 400 years, offering enriching experiences at a remarkable venue across four centuries. For a city, it is vital to have public spaces of community, places where people can meet and exchange ideas. That is why we want to celebrate a place of community that has been used in many different ways over 400 years, and that is precisely why it is so well suited to serve as a model of civic spirit. A theatre lives through the people who make its performances possible – the theatre makers just as much as the audience.

Acting, dancing, and sports—all of this was once possible in the Ballhaus. On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of today’s Salzburg State Theatre, John von Düffel has written a play that brings its prehistory to life as it might have been. An ambitious architect plans the new building as a place of civic community, yet disputes over its use soon arise. By day, sport, dance, and drama compete for space; by night, the Ballhaus becomes a place of longing and dreams. Suddenly, the story of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” unfolds there, emerging from the interplay of these disciplines. Lovers search for and find a place of confusion and enchantment, encounter fairies and a theatre troupe, and experience a mad night filled with fabulously dancing shadow creatures. By the next morning, no one quite knows what was real and what was not…

From 7 February at the Salzburg State Theatre. More information can be found HERE.

As part of this anniversary, a book has also been created: "400 Years of Theatre next to the Mirabellgardens – 400 Theatre People". In it, we celebrate 400 years of theatre together with all the wonderful theatre people who have worked and continue to work here. Perhaps the most beautiful declaration of love to theatre people was written by Jean-Louis Barrault. The French theatre maker tenderly captured the essence of those who make theatre possible in his book "Ich bin ein Theatermensch". The traits and reflections described there have served as a guiding principle and motif for this anniversary book.
