Stephen Medcalf is an internationally renowned British opera director. For the Salzburg State Theatre he has directed Albert Herring, Ariadne auf Naxos and Death in Venice.

Winner of the coveted Premio Abbiati Italian critics’ prize, Stephen has directed numerous highly acclaimed productions in the world’s major opera houses including The Queen of Spades at La Scala, Milan; Norma, Carmen, and Aida at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari; Manon Lescaut in Parma, Bari, Valencia &  Bilbao; Die Entführung aus dem Serail  in Ancona, Cagliari, Palermo & Thessaloniki; Die Zauberflöte in Parma, Ferrara, Valencia, Cagliari, Amsterdam & London and Mascagni’s Il piccolo Marat, Rimsky Korsakov’s May Night, Delius’ A Village Romeo and Juliet, and Foroni’s Cristina Regina di Svezia at the Wexford Festival, which won the International Opera Award for Best Opera Rediscovery.

In the UK, Stephen has directed Aida at the Royal Albert Hall, Le Nozze di Figaro for the Glyndebourne Festival and Die Fliegender Hollande for Opera North.  For Grange Park Opera, he has directed Hänsel und Gretel, Capriccio, Die Walküre, La Fanciulla del West, La Bohème and un Ballo in Maschera.  He has also directed numerous productions for the Buxton Festival, Mid Wales Opera and English Touring Opera where he was Director of Productions (1991-1997). With a particular interest in the development of young singers and directors, Stephen was Resident Producer of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama Opera Course (1991-2004), has taught at the Verona Opera Academy and Royal Northern College of Music, and mentored young directors for Independent Opera.

Recent and forthcoming engagements include Ariodante, Landestheater Niederbayern; Carmen, Teatro Regio di Torino;   The Seraglio for English Touring Opera; The Land of Smiles, Budapest Operetta Theatre; La Gioconda, Falstaff, and a new opera, The Life and Death of Alexander Litvinenko by Anthony Bolton for Grange Park Opera.
