Susanne Frieling

Director

Susanne Frieling was born and raised in the Allgäu region. She studied Theatre Studies and Sociology at LMU Munich as well as Theatre Pedagogy at the University of Music and Theatre Rostock. During her studies, she was part of the performance collective Maria Gyrlzs and the theatre collective Stiller.

Her artistic home as a director lies in the field of devised theatre. She often works with well-known literary sources, which she recontextualises, collages, and sets in contemporary frameworks. Her piece “Baby don’t hurt me”, based on Nabokov’s novel Lolita, was invited to the 39th Heidelberger Stückemarkt in 2022. In collaboration with Theater Hora, her production “Karl!” opened the 2022/23 season at Theater Konstanz in September 2022.

Further productions have been presented at Schauspiel Frankfurt, Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Theater Baden-Baden, and Theaterhaus Jena. Alongside queer-feminist themes, Susanne Frieling focuses strongly on inclusive theatre and on working with non-professional performers.
