Leading critics have described him as the most important tenor to emerge from the Basque Country in the past fifty years. Born in Abadiño, Vizcaya, he began his vocal training at the Durango Conservatory. He later moved to Bilbao, Madrid, Marseille, Paris, Rome and the United States to continue his studies.

At his first foray into the world of opera, Gorrotxategi was hailed as the best new Spanish tenor. Over the years, he has built an impressive career, and critics once again showered him with praise following his debut as Gabriele in “Simon Boccanegra”, describing him as a “perfect tenor” with a “powerful and radiant voice”.

The singer has won several competitions, including the Jaume Aragall Competition and the Manuel Ausensi Competition. His international career began with his 2011 debut as Pinkerton in “Madama Butterfly” in Novara, taking him to some of the world’s most renowned opera houses and concert halls, including the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, the Opéra de Lausanne, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Felsenreitschule in Salzburg, the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, the Teatro Bellas Artes in Mexico City, the Sydney Opera House, the Semperoper Dresden, the Opéra de Monte-Carlo and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing.

He also remains committed to the Spanish operetta tradition and regularly performs at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, where in recent seasons he has appeared in “Curro Vargas” (Curro), “El Gato Montés” (Rafael) and “La Villana” (Don Fabrique). “María del Pilar” and “El Caserío” are among his forthcoming engagements.

He has worked with renowned conductors including Zubin Mehta, Roberto Abbado, Miguel Ángel Gómez Martínez, Jesús López Cobos, Stefano Ranzani, Danielle Callegari, Guillermo García Calvo, Renato Palumbo and Óliver Díaz.

His repertoire includes some of the most important tenor roles in the operatic repertoire, including “Carmen” (Don José), “Tosca” (Cavaradossi), “Attila” (Foresto), “La Fanciulla del West” (Dick Johnson), “I Masnadieri” (Carlo) and “Il Trovatore” (Manrico).

In Salzburg, he appeared in 2013 as Werther in Massenet’s opera of the same name.

In recent years, he has increasingly turned to more dramatic roles, making his role debuts in “Manon Lescaut”, “Otello” and “Samson et Dalila”.
