Caroline Richards

Caroline Richards is an actress and director of British origin. She studied English Literature and Theatre Studies at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with an MA (Honours), and continued her training in Paris at the École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq. Her studies there laid the foundation for her theatrical work.

In 1991, she moved to Austria, learned the German language, and began working as an actress in the independent theatre scene. From 2001 to 2004, she was a member of the ensemble at the Landestheater Niederösterreich.

In 2000, she founded the children’s and youth theatre Taka-Tuka (now TATU Theater), and since 2007 she has been part of the artistic management team at kleines theater, haus der freien szene in Salzburg. Since 2003, she has directed more than 70 productions, including at Schauspielhaus Salzburg, Musikverein Wien, Philharmonie Luxembourg, the Salzburger Adventsingen at the Großes Festspielhaus (for seven years), Landestheater Niederösterreich, Next Liberty Graz, Innsbrucker Kellertheater, Theater des Kindes in Linz, Theater an der Rott, Carinthischer Sommer, and Palazzo productions in Stuttgart, Hamburg, Berlin, Nuremberg, and Vienna.

Her productions frequently tour in Germany, Austria, South Tyrol, and Switzerland. They have been repeatedly awarded by the Austrian Ministry of Culture (BMUKK), and in 2021 she received the Salzburg Prize of the City of Salzburg for her achievements in theatre.

She is currently performing the role of “Hebe” in Orpheus in the Underworld at the Volksoper Vienna, touring with her solo piece The Comic Tragedy, and directing the musical The Three Stanislavs at the Raimund Theater.
