Christian Freund

Christian Freund, born in 1990 in Lüdenscheid, holds bachelor’s degrees in Educational Science and Physics, as well as master’s degrees in Linguistics and Modern German Literature (NDL) from Ruhr University Bochum, before completing his Master’s in Acting at the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig (HMT Leipzig).
As an actor, he has performed at theatres in Berlin, Bochum, Bonn, Bremen, Dortmund, Dresden, Frankfurt and Leipzig.
He has collaborated with numerous directors and artists, including Kay Voges, Andreas Kriegenburg, Elsa-Sophie Jach, Sapir Heller, Alize Zandwijk, Rainald Grebe, Armin Petras, Jan Friedrich, Pınar Karabulut, Ersan Mondtag, Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson, Wolfgang Engel, Roman Senkl, Sascha Hawemann, Susanne Lietzow, Jorinde Dröse, Ed. Hauswirth, Nina Mattenklotz, Marcus Lobbes, Christian von Borries, Johannes Lepper, Antigone Akgün, Holk Freytag, Gordon Kämmerer, Jörg Buttgereit, Paolo Magelli, Thorsten Bihegue, DIE KASSIERER, Michael Neil McCrae, Romy Weyrauch, Schorsch Kamerun and PC Nackt. He maintains a close working relationship with director Max Immendorf.
Since 2016, Christian Freund has also worked freelance as a set designer, writer, lighting designer, sound designer (e.g. Theater Aachen, Theater Bonn), voice actor (including WDR), and for film and television (e.g. ARD). He has been invited to events such as Ars Electronica, the Hof International Film Festival, the ATT, the Brecht Festival, the Saxon and NRW Theatre Meetings, as well as three times to the Berlin Theatertreffen. His short film “Threshold” won the Straight 8 competition in London in 2017 and was invited to the 70th Festival de Cannes.
Since 2022, he has been co-founder and artistic director of the Rabbit Hole Theater in Essen, where he has staged several of his own plays as well as works by Kafka, Kelly, Kleist, Handke, Brecht and Borchert. His productions have also been presented at Staatsschauspiel Dresden, Rottstr.5-Theater Bochum, Theater Bremen and at various festivals.
At the Salzburg Landestheater, he will appear in “Adams Äpfel” in the 2025/2026 season.
