Christiane Mudra
Director
Christiane Mudra is a director, author, and founder of "investigative theater". Her works are based on long-term journalistic research into topics such as right-wing extremism, antisemitism, misogyny, and digital politics. Since 2013, she has been writing and directing interdisciplinary formats that frequently extend beyond conventional theatre spaces.
With "freiheit.exe – Utopias as Malware", she explored the ideological rootkits of Silicon Valley, building on her music theatre production "BETA" at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, which examined the democracy-threatening concentration of power among Big Tech companies.
Her productions in Munich and Berlin include "The Holy Bitch Project", addressing domestic, sexualized, and digital violence against women; "Xploit", an investigation into exploitation in the low-wage sector (Kaufhof Munich); "Hotel Utopia", an interactive social game about the value of passports (Tempelhof Airport, Berlin); "Selfie & Me", exploring mental illness in a performance-driven society; and staged readings, most recently focusing on childhood during the Siege of Sarajevo.
With a trilogy examining continuities of right-wing extremism, "investigative theater" transformed real crime scenes across Munich into sites of performance and reflection.
For "No Plaintiff – Nazi Lawyers and Their Post-War Careers", Mudra conducted interviews with contemporary witnesses in Germany and Israel, including prosecutors from the Eichmann and Auschwitz trials. From 2013 to 2018, she observed the NSU trial. In the United States, she researched the manosphere and the Alt-Right movement.
Her theatre film "The Holy Bitch Project" was screened at the New York City Independent Film Festival. She has directed productions at the invitation of the Goethe-Institut in Brazil, was an Artist in Residence at the Venice Biennale, and regularly speaks at conferences including the Chaos Communication Congress and re.
Mudra’s research is also published in non-fiction books, radio plays, and podcasts for institutions such as the Federal Agency for Civic Education (Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung) and Deutschlandfunk Kultur.
