Georg Schmiedleitner
Director
Georg Schmiedleitner was a co-founder of Theater Phönix in Linz. Since 1996 he has worked as a freelance director in both drama and opera (including "Der Ring des Nibelungen", 2016). He has directed at the Burgtheater Vienna, Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, Hamburger Schauspielhaus, Schauspielhaus Bochum, Schauspiel Leipzig, Staatsoper Hannover, the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich, the Semperoper Dresden, and regularly at Staatstheater Nürnberg.
In 2005 he received the Nestroy Prize for the world premiere of Franzobel’s "hunt oder Der totale Februar". He was nominated again in 2013 for "Kasimir und Karoline" (Theater in der Josefstadt) and a third time for his production of "Vor Sonnenaufgang". His production of "Richard III" at Theater Regensburg in 2022 was nominated for the prestigious Faust Prize.
Most recently, his opera productions of "Powder Her Face" at the Semperoper Dresden, "Der Rosenkavalier" in Mainz, and "Guillaume Tell" at the new Musiktheater Linz met with strong acclaim and lively discussion.
