Mathias Schlung

Drama

Mathias Schlung was trained at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna, where he was awarded the Appreciation Prize of the Austrian Federal Minister for Science and Art.

The native of Göttingen is known to many from television, including appearances in “Die Dreisten Drei”, “Happy Friday” (SAT.1), and “Polizeiruf 110” (ARD). His great passion, however, belongs to the theatre. From 1996 to 1999, he was engaged at the Deutsches Theater in Göttingen. Since 1995, he has appeared repeatedly at the Salzburg Festival, and from 2001 to 2006 he performed at the GRIPS Theater in Berlin.

In 2009, Mathias Schlung took on the leading role in “Das Leben des Siegfried” at the Nibelungen Festival in Worms. In recent years, he has increasingly worked in musical theatre. At the Theater des Westens in Berlin, he played Abahachi in the world premiere of the musical “Der Schuh des Manitu” (2008–2010). He appeared as J. Pierrepont Finch in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” (2014/16) at the Staatsoper Hannover and the Volksoper Wien, and as Seymour in “Little Shop of Horrors” at the Opera Bonn. At the Bad Hersfeld Festival, he portrayed Henry Etches in “Titanic” and also appeared there in “Der Prozess” and “Emil and the Detectives” at the Stiftsruine in Bad Hersfeld.

Fortunately, Mathias Schlung was also able to continue working during the pandemic period. Together with Salzburg-based author Elfi Schweiger, he developed several readings and theatre pieces (“Jedermann and Death in the Apple Tree,” “The Cello,” “The Football Revue,” “There’s Only One Like That”). He returned to the Semperoper with the Spoliansky revue “How Do I Become Rich and Happy?” and finally appeared again as Abahachi in “Der Schuh des Manitu” (2021/22), a co-production of the Deutsches Theater in Munich and the Salzburg State Theatre under the direction of Andreas Gergen.

In 2022/2023, he moved to Vienna, where he performed more than 200 shows of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” at the Ronacher. In addition, he regularly works as a voice actor for radio and as a presenter.
