Matthias Kronfuss
Stage design
Born in Vienna, Matthias Kronfuss is an interdisciplinary artist working across stage design, graphic design, photography and video. Alongside his longstanding freelance work as a graphic designer, he began focusing on scenography in 2015. He gained his first experience in stage design at Theater an der Wien, working with Torsten Fischer and Herbert Schäfer on new productions of “Die Zauberflöte” and “Guillaume Tell”.
He has maintained a long-standing collaboration with renowned Canadian set designer Michael Levine, whom he assisted on new productions of “Madama Butterfly” (Vienna State Opera 2020, Bregenz Festival 2022), “Das Schlaue Füchslein” (Bavarian State Opera 2022) and “Semele” (Bavarian State Opera 2023). His first independent work was “La Clemenza di Tito” (directed by Laurence Dale) at the Oldenburg State Theatre in 2019, followed by the Wagner project “Wider das Verlöschen” in Karlsruhe in 2022.
In 2022, he also began a collaboration with Sebastian Hannak in the field of ballet at Salzburg State Theatre, working with Hannak’s long-standing choreographic partner Reginaldo Oliviera on the world premiere of “Lili, the Danish Girl”. During the 2022/2023 season, Matthias Kronfuss was responsible for set and costume design for “Meister Eder und sein Pumuckl: Das Weihnachtsfest” (directed by Sarah Henker) and “Biografie: Ein Spiel” (directed by Marco Dott).
