Michael Schober was born in Graz. He studied at the conservatories in Graz and Vienna and completed his vocal studies with a diploma at the MUK Vienna. Already during his studies, the bass-baritone appeared on stage in numerous roles, including Papageno in “Die Zauberflöte”, the Water Goblin in “Rusalka”, and Don Pizarro in “Fidelio”.

He was a guest at the Bregenz Festival twice, most recently in 2007 as Cross Crosshaulson in Benjamin Britten’s “Paul Bunyan”, conducted by Steuart Bedford. At Theater Nordhausen (Thuringia), he sang roles such as Don Fernando in Beethoven’s “Fidelio” and Cristiano in “Un ballo in maschera”. His concert repertoire includes the bass-baritone parts in the Requiems by Mozart and Verdi. He can also be heard regularly as a soloist at Salzburg Cathedral, including performances of the “Coronation Mass” and other masses.

He has worked with renowned directors and conductors such as Michael Sturminger, Cesare Lievi, Immo Karaman, Stephen Langridge, Alexander Soddy, Attilio Cremonesi, Giacomo Sagripanti, and Lorenzo Viotti.

From the 2012/2013 to the 2016/2017 season, Michael Schober was a member of the opera chorus at Stadttheater Klagenfurt. As a soloist, he appeared there as Curio in “Giulio Cesare in Egitto”, Farfarello in Shostakovich’s “The Love for Three Oranges”, Speaker/Second Armed Man in “Die Zauberflöte”, Snug in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, and Uncle Bonzo in “Madama Butterfly”. Further roles included Capellio in “I Capuleti e i Montecchi”, Zuniga in Bizet’s “Carmen”, the Fifth Jew in “Salome”, and Montano in Verdi’s “Otello”.

In the 2017/2018 season, he was a member of the opera chorus at Salzburg State Theatre and appeared as a soloist, among others, as Krespel/Luther in “The Tales of Hoffmann” and as Antonio in “Le nozze di Figaro”. In the 2018/2019 season, he was part of the theatre’s opera ensemble, performing roles in “Wiener Blut”, “Manon”, “Meine Stille Nacht”, “La Gazzetta”, “Der Prozess – The Trial”, as well as the Commendatore in “Don Giovanni” and roles in “Le nozze di Figaro”.

He subsequently worked as a freelance singer in Germany, including engagements at Theater Nordhausen. Since the 2024/2025 season, he has again been a member of the opera chorus at Salzburg State Theatre, where he has sung solo parts in “Il viaggio a Reims”, “Martha”, and “Il mondo alla rovescia”, among others.
