Amélie Niermeyer

Director

Amélie Niermeyer was born in Bonn and completed her high school diploma in St. Louis, USA. From 1988 to 1990, she worked as an assistant director at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel in Munich, where she also began directing her own productions. In 1992, she received the City of Munich’s sponsorship award for “Women’s Research and Women’s Culture” and moved to Theater Dortmund as Artistic Director of Drama. Just two years later, she returned to the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel as Resident Director under Eberhard Witt.

Among her many productions, Thomas Jonigk’s “Rottweiler” and Ibsen’s “Hedda Gabler” were among her greatest successes in Munich, both featuring Juliane Köhler in the leading role.

In 1995, Amélie Niermeyer became Artistic Director of Drama at Schauspiel Frankfurt, while continuing to direct productions in Munich, Jakarta, Los Angeles, at Thalia Theater Hamburg and at Deutsches Theater Berlin. From 2002 to 2006, she served as Artistic Director of Theater Freiburg. From 2006 to 2011, Amélie Niermeyer was Director and General Artistic Director of Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus.

Until September 2026, she was a professor at Mozarteum University Salzburg, where she headed the Thomas Bernhard Institute for Acting and Directing. Alongside her academic work, she continued to direct opera and drama productions, including at Munich’s Residenztheater and Bavarian State Opera, as well as at Theater an der Wien.

Since October 2026, she has been President of the Bavarian Theatre Academy August Everding.
