Valentina Turcu

Choreographin

Valentina Turcu comes from a family of artists. She began her career as a dancer with Maurice Béjart in Lausanne. As a choreographer and director, she has staged over 140 ballet, theater and opera productions and is currently the resident choreographer at the Ballet of the Slovenian National Theater in Maribor, under the artistic direction of Edward Clug.

In 2015, the artist was nominated for the Kyoto Prize and received the Latvian prize for the best ballet production. In 2018, she received the Slovenian National Art and Culture Fund Award and in 2019 the Croatian Theater Award for the best ballet production and choreography.

Her most successful creations include „Carmen“, „Hamlet“, „Romeo and Juliet“, „Dangerous Liaisons“, „Onegin“, „Death in Venice”, „The Lady of the Camellias” and „Madame Bovary”. In her dramatic works, she explores psychological relationships and the eternal dilemmas of human society. Her pieces are characterized by intense expression, precision and an unmistakable aesthetic style.

Valentina Turcu's haunting story ballets have attracted international attention in recent years with their choreographic form of poetic storytelling, including at the Staatstheater Augsburg, the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, the Czech National Theatre in Brno and the Béjart Ballet Lausanne.
