Carl Philip von Maldeghem

Artistic Director

Carl Philip von Maldeghem was born in 1969. After studying law in Passau, he studied acting and directing in New York. He worked for three consecutive years at the Salzburg Festival as the artistic director Gerard Mortier’s associate and spokesman. Since 1997, he has been working regularly with Peter Stein as co-director and assistant at the Easter Festival in Salzburg, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the Vienna State Opera.


As Artistic Director’s Associate and Resident Stage Director, he has been affiliated with the State Theatre of Baden between 1998 and 2002 for opera as well as drama. A selection of his stage productions: “Master Class” by Terence McNally, Ken Ludwig´s “Lend me a tenor”, “Trainspotting” by Irvine Welsh, “The Oresteia” by Aischylos and “L’Inganno Felice” by Rossini.


In 2002, Carl Philip von Maldeghem assumed the position as Artistic Director of Dramatic Stages Stuttgart as the youngest artistic director of a large theatre company in Germany. His new artistic program placed the theatre among the three top-ranking German theaters in terms of total numbers of visitors. Over 140 productions have been staged under his artistic supervsision, own productions include “Mighty Aphrodite” by Woody Allen, a stage adaptation of Homers “Odyssey”, Sartres “No Exit” and Shakespeare`s “Midsummernight`s Dream” which received wide acclaim.
In 2009, he moved to the position of Artistic Director of the Salzburg State Theatre oversseeing 25 new productions per year and four resident companies in opera, theatre and dance. The theatre´s profile has developed rapidly since and quickly become well known for its distinctive work and its success with audiences. Since the first season, more than 400 productions have been producerd and audience numbers increased by 80%. The company is performing in five different venues in Salzburg and is regularly touring nationally and internationally.
