Carl Philip von Maldeghem
Artistic Director
Carl Philip von Maldeghem was born in 1969. After studying law in Passau, he studied acting and directing in New York. He worked for three consecutive years at the Salzburg Festival as artistic director Gerard Mortier’s associate and spokesman. Since 1997, he has regularly worked with Peter Stein as co-director and assistant at the Salzburg Easter Festival, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the Vienna State Opera.
As Artistic Director’s Associate and Resident Stage Director, he was affiliated with the State Theatre of Baden from 1998 to 2002, working in both opera and drama. A selection of his stage productions includes Terence McNally’s “Master Class”, Ken Ludwig’s “Lend Me a Tenor”, Irvine Welsh’s “Trainspotting”, Aeschylus’ “The Oresteia” and Rossini’s “L’Inganno Felice”.
In 2002, Carl Philip von Maldeghem assumed the position of Artistic Director of Dramatic Stages Stuttgart, becoming the youngest artistic director of a major theatre company in Germany. His new artistic programme placed the theatre among the three leading German theatres in terms of total audience numbers. More than 140 productions were staged under his artistic direction. His own productions include Woody Allen’s “Mighty Aphrodite”, a stage adaptation of Homer’s “Odyssey”, Sartre’s “No Exit” and Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, all of which received wide acclaim.
In 2009, he became Artistic Director of the Salzburg State Theatre, overseeing 25 new productions per year and four resident companies in opera, drama and dance. Since then, the theatre’s profile has developed rapidly, becoming widely known for its distinctive artistic work and success with audiences. Since his first season, more than 400 productions have been presented and audience numbers have increased by 80%. The company performs at five different venues in Salzburg and regularly tours nationally and internationally.
His productions as a stage director include Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “Lulu”, “Die Ilias”, “Bend it like Beckham”, “Dionysia”, “The Trial”, “Peter Pan”, “Cyrano de Bergerac”, “Cinderella”, “Kasimir und Karoline”, “The Neverending Story”, “XANADU”, “Die Orestie”, “Mindcraft”, “FAUST²” and “The Flying Dutchman”.
