Kate Watson

Dance Educator

Kate Watson received her training in her home country of England at the Elmhurst Ballet School and the Central School of Ballet. During this time, she performed with British Gas Ballet Central in choreographies by Christopher Gable, Michael Keegan-Dolan, and Derek Williams.

From 1995 to 1999, the agile dancer was engaged with the Israel Ballet, where she danced leading female roles in "La fille mal gardée" and "Graduation Ball", as well as solo roles in George Balanchine’s ballets "Square Dances", "La Valse", and "Symphony in C". In 1999, Kate Watson became a member of the Peter Schaufuss Ballet, where she also appeared in solo roles, including Ophelia in "Hamlet". For her portrayal of Miss Carlsen in the ballet "Nightwatch", she was named Best Female Dancer in Denmark by Dance Europe Magazine in 2002.

Alongside her stage engagements, she has been teaching at the Peter Schaufuss Ballet School since 2006. After supporting the ensemble in productions such as "Marilyn", "A Little Dance Story", and "Viennese Evening", she became a permanent member of the Salzburg Ballet in the 2010/2011 season. Since then, she has appeared in numerous productions including "Elements", "Marie Antoinette", "The Beatles Dance Evening", "Blues in the Mountain", "Swan Lake", and "The Nutcracker".

As a choreographer, she created "Around the World in 80 Days – A Dance" in the 2013/2014 season at the Kammerspiele together with Josef Vesely and Alexander Korobko, followed in subsequent seasons by "Wild in the Woods" and "The Chronicles of Narnia".

Since the 2017/2018 season, she has been working as a dance educator at the Salzburg State Theatre, offering a wide-ranging program for young audiences and schools.

She continues to be responsible for numerous original choreographies, particularly within the Young Theatre division. These include "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice", "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", "The Rhinoceroses", "The Little Witch", "Dionysia: Peace", "Kick It Like Beckham", "Jacob in a Dress", "The Rainbow Fish", and "The Dream Eater".

In the musical productions "The Rocky Horror Show" and "Cabaret", she worked together with Josef Vesely both as choreographer and dancer. Her elegant choreographies can also be found in numerous opera productions, including "Viva la Diva", "Cinderella", "Ariadne on Naxos", and most recently "Don Giovanni".

For her choreography of "Jacob in a Dress", she was awarded the STELLA Award in 2022 in the category "Special Jury Prize: Dance".

Kate Watson is a woman of many talents: in the 2023/2024 season, she not only choreographed the production "The Course of Life" but also designed its projections. In the current season, her joint choreographies with Josef Vesely in "The Little Ghost" once again enchant both young audiences and adults alike.
