Balacobaco

Reginaldo Oliveira

A Brazilian ballet celebration

31.12.2018 / Landestheater

Synopsis

“Balacobaco” – this word is used in Brazilian dialect to speak of something truly great, a superlative of wonderful that describes excelling beauty, joy or happiness. Reginaldo Oliveira, the Salzburg State Theatre’s leading choreographer, presents himself and his home country to Salzburg audiences with very lively scenes and intense images. Together with his dancers he tells of the colours, rhythms, energy and especially the soul of Brazil.

Oliveira grew up in Rio de Janeiro and discovered his love of classical dance early on. Following his time as a soloist at the Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro he joined the Badisches Staatsballett Karlsruhe in the 2006/2007 season. There, he also received much acclaim as a choreographer. The Salzburg State Theatre will also present his work “The People Versus M.” (“Der Fall M.”), originally commissioned by the Badisches Staatsballett, as part of this season’s “Dionysia” project. The new head of the Salzburg State Theatre’s ballet division was also chosen as choreographer of the year 2016 by the industry magazine “tanz” for his work “Anne Frank”. In April 2016 Reginaldo Oliveira’s first full-length ballet “Anne Frank” was a triumphant success at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe. His choreographies, such as “Attempt” (2010), “Torn” (2012), “Across the Border” (2012), “Attacke” (2014) and “Presente” (2014), have enthused audiences – who can also expect exciting new ballet impulses in Salzburg!
