Bossa Nova
Kristian Lever und Jonathan dos Santos
Synopsis
With “Bossa Nova”, the rehearsal centre in Aigen presents a night of ballet and music filled with Brazilian nonchalance and joie de vivre. Reginaldo Oliveira, head of the ballet division, has invited two guests: Kristian Lever, familiar to Salzburg audiences from the ballet night “3 x Chopin” or the choreography for the opera “Oberon”, and Jonathan dos Santos, a rising star among Brazil’s young choreographers. The two artists will approach this musical style in their respective idioms of dance, which differ greatly from each other, and will explore the topic in their very own images and stories, boldly contrasting the theme with contemporary dance or transferring it into neoclassical ballet steps.
Created in the 1950s on Beco das Garrafas, a short alley in Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana district, and inspired by the elegant style of Brazil’s wealthy middle class, Bossa Nova blends elements of fast and rhythmic Samba or Samba Cançao with the harmonies of European Impressionism as well as American Jazz and Black Music. A night full of musical and choreographic surprises staged in the special intimacy and closeness of the rehearsal centre in Aigen. The big, gentle waves of Bossa Nova will carry you away to Copacabana!
The Finnish-British choreographer Kristian Lever has worked for the Ballett Vorpommern, the Royal Danish Ballet, the Finnish National Ballet and the Jeune Ballet Genève, among others. He founded the production company Klever Creatives in 2019, which develops international theatre and dance productions. At the Salzburg State Theatre, Lever has choreographed the opera “Oberon” (2019/2020) as well as “Greener Grass” as part of the ballet night “3 x Chopin” (2021/2022).
Jonathan dos Santos studied in his home country of Brazil as well as in Canada. His career as a dancer took him from the company of Sao José dos Campos to the Ballett Nordhausen, the Ballett Rossa at the Halle Opera House and to Gauthier Dance in Stuttgart. As a choreographer he has for instance worked for the ballet of the Mecklenburg State Theatre, the
