Grand New Year’s Eve Concert
Synopsis
With the “St. Petersburg Sleigh Ride”, the programme of the Salzburg State Theatre’s original Grand New Year’s Eve Concert, held at the Great Festival Hall with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, builds bridges between the artistic traditions of Russia and Austria. The concert opens with the first movement of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s symphony “Winter Daydreams” before turning to waltzes from “The Nutcracker” and by Dmitri Shostakovich. The “St. Petersburg Sleigh Ride” marks the transition to the Austrian part of the programme, which for instance comprises a waltz by Johann Strauss, addressed to the ladies of St. Petersburg, as well as the polka “Delights of Winter”.
Alma Deutscher, who is only 14 years old, will add to the programme as a guest soloist and composer. Her “Waltz of the Sirens” will see its Salzburg premiere at the concert.
Leslie Suganandarajah conducts the Mozarteum Orchestra and presents himself to the audience in his new function as the Musical Director at the Salzburg State Theatre.
