Otfried Preußler

Ages 5 and up

Musical play for children

Premiere: November 7, 2025 / Salzburg State Theatre

Synopsis

There is chaos in the sleepy little town of Eulenberg, and it is spooky. Mysterious events in the last few days have left nothing as it was. Things have been stolen, houses have been broken into, and someone has doodled on all the posters for the town’s grand 325th anniversary. It is outrageous! There is much speculation as rumours and suspicions begin to spread. Someone claims to have seen a big, suspect figure; others are even talking of ghosts. In fact, the little ghost of Eulenstein Castle had envisioned its very first outing in daylight quite differently. And now it is caught in a terrible dilemma! How can it explain things when nobody is listening because everybody is scared? The little ghost wants nothing more than to become a night ghost again! But what is it to do? The only one who can help now is its old friend Schuhu, the owl…

“The Little Ghost” is one of Otfried Preußler’s (1923–2013) most famous children’s books. The timeless story of courage, friendship and the overcoming of clichés is presented in the highly imaginative style of director Anna Lukasser-Weitlaner, the Young Theatre division’s artistic co-director. Michael Lindner contributes the eerily beautiful stage design. New music is added by Katrin Schweiger, who has had great success with the productions “The Flying Classroom” and “The Neverending Story”.
