George's Secret Key to the Universe

An opera that narrates a trip into space, introduces us to the world’s most powerful computer and also tells the story of a beautiful friendship: Based on a novel by mathematics genius Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy, the latest work commissioned by the Salzburg State Theatre has all this and much more to offer.

Stephen Hawking achieved fame primarily for his ground-breaking work as an astrophysicist and mathematician. Lucy Hawking is a writer, and together with her father she wrote a book for the entire family, following young George and his friend Annie on their wild, adventurous journey through the universe, where they are threatened by evil powers trying to plunge the young explorers into black holes.

The Salzburg State Theatre has commissioned an opera for the 21st century that is suitable for all generations and promises musical highlights in its depiction of space and the world of computers as well as in the portrayal of its characters. Apart from witnessing a hero’s journey through the universe, young and adult audiences will also gain insight into matters of astrophysics that they have always wanted to understand but have not yet been able to fully grasp.

The ensemble of soloists and the choir of the Salzburg State Theatre, the Mozarteum Orchestra, as well as the Salzburg Festival and Theatre Children’s Choir, join forces to enable this discovery of scientific findings in a musical cosmos.
