THE LITTLE PRINCE

Inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Word premiere / Fantasy ballet / Ages 5 and up

Premiere 20/02/2019

Synopsis

A pilot is desperately trying to fix his plane after a crash in the middle of the desert. Suddenly, the little prince appears and asks the pilot to draw a sheep for him. He is the first to interpret the pilot’s drawings correctly. The little prince tells the pilot about his home planet, on which there is nothing but three tiny volcanoes, a rose and himself. He left the planet in search of friends, because he was weary of his rose and her pretensions. But ever since then he has been very worried about his beloved, unique flower. And the bizarre “big people” whom he has encountered on his journey to six other planets were all unable to help. The king, the narcissist, the businessman and all the other grown-ups are much too absorbed in their own lives and their own problems. Only an untamed fox on the seventh planet – Earth – is able to teach the prince what he wants to know. Friendship requires time, trust and responsibility: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; anything essential is invisible to the eye.”

The magic of this timeless story lies in the endearing figure of the little prince, who encounters everybody openly and curiously and opens up a new perspective on what is essential in life: friendship, love and compassion. The Salzburg ballet ensemble recounts the little prince’s journey in fantastic images.

With 180 translations, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s (1900–1944) poetic parable of the little prince is one of the great stories of world literature that move and enthral children and adults alike.

Choreographer Flavio Salamanka shines a poetic light on the truth behind the matter: What do we really need to be happy? Salamanka created his first choreography “Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt” in 2010, followed by “Burn it Blue” in 2011. He choreographed the “Dance of the Hours” for the opera production of “La Gioconda” at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, where he also created further choreographies, e.g. for the evening “Choreografen stellen sich vor”. Salamanka, who holds the title of Kammertänzer, joined the ballet ensemble of the Salzburg State Theatre in the 2017/2018 season.
