Pjotr Iljitsch Tschaikowsky
Ballet in two acts with additional Music by Philip Glas
A winter fairy tale for the whole family awaits dance fans on the State Theatre stage. With »The Nutcracker«, Peter Breuer takes up a classical narrative ballet featuring music by Tchaikovsky.
The Composer got to know the story based on E. T. A. Hoffmann's narrative »Nutcracker and Mouse King« in a version by his brother Modest, which was performed by Tchaikovsky's nieces and nephews at a Christmas party. When he told the choreographer Marius Petipa about it, Petipa appeared to be immediately excited about the idea and began working out a ballet libretto together with Lev Ivanov. It offered Tchaikovsky the opportunity to demonstrate his compositional talents in all facets with Chinese, Russian and Arabian dances, as well as numerous fantastic elements. Together they created a timeless masterpiece that experienced its triumphal world premiere in St. Petersburg in 1892. Along with the other two great Tchaikovsky ballets »Sleeping Beauty« and »Swan Lake«, »The Nutcracker« counts among the core pieces of the ballet repertoire and has been enchanting little as well as big theatergoers for generations equally.
