Synopsis

“Time is a curious thing. As we live day by day it means nothing at all. But suddenly, it is all we feel.” The notion of inexorable change and a new beginning is pervading everything. This is how the field marshal’s wife is feeling one morning as she is in bed with her lover Octavian. When Baron Ochs interrupts the intimate tête-à-tête, the plot picks up steam. He unexpectedly chooses Octavian as his matchmaker and instructs him to deliver a silver rose to young Sophie Faninal as a symbol of her engagement to the baron. When Octavian visits Sophie to present the rose, the matchmaker and the bride fall in love.

“Der Rosenkavalier” by Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal combines a turbulent comedy about romantic trials and errors with much Viennese flair, buoyant waltzes and deep insights. All these elements blend to create one of the most profoundly human and deeply moving narratives in opera history. The opera also draws a lively portrait of society in the last days of the Habsburg empire.

With “Der Rosenkavalier”, Richard Strauss created a musical and theatrical masterpiece that represents a tour de force for any theatre. To mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Salzburg Cultural Association (Salzburger Kulturvereinigung), the Salzburg State Theatre cooperates with this institution to present the unique opera on the stage of the Felsenreitschule.

”Der Rosenkavalier” was the second collaboration of Richard Strauss (1864–1949) and Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1874–1929), both co-founders of the Salzburg Festival. The opera became an instant success with its world premiere in Dresden in 1911: Special trains had to be scheduled to accommodate the crowds. The work is still considered a highlight of the comic opera genre.

Musical Director Leslie Suganandarajah realises this comic opera together with director Roland Schwab, who has staged productions at the Bavarian State Opera and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Once more, they collaborate with Piero Vinciguerra and Gabriele Rupprecht. The team previously thrilled audiences at the Felsenreitschule with their successful production of “Lohengrin”.
