THE SORROWS OF YOUNG WERTHER
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Adapted for the stage by Johannes Ender
Synopsis
Johannes Ender’s stage adaptation of Goethe’s passionate epistolary novel, a prime example of “Sturm und Drang” literature, was a great success with audiences in the 2017/2018 season.
Lotte is engaged to marry level-headed Albert when she meets Werther. In him, she finds a soulmate and a possibility of love outside of the bourgeois concept of marriage. Werther seeks every opportunity to be near Lotte, even though he is tormented by his unrequited love for her. But Lotte is playing with fire, too. She marries Albert, even though she is unable to forget her wistful admirer. Disaster looms…
“The stage production escalates the meeting of the two rivals to great effect. Hanno Waldner as the hot-headed protagonist strives for the object of his desire with almost child-like determination. His burning heart cannot let go of Lotte.” Salzburger Nachrichten
