Die Zauberflöte (MT)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
6+ \ A production of the Salzburg Marionette Theatre with the Salzburg State Theatre
Synopsis
Not only its grandiose arias and immortal melodies, but also its fantastic stage magic made Mozart's "Magic Flute" a sensational success immediately after its premiere in 1791 in Vienna. Up to today this opera has succeeded like no other in exciting children and adults alike. Since 1951, "The Magic Flute" has been performed at the Salzburg Marionette Theatre.
Even Mozart already conceived "The Magic Flute" more than 200 years ago as a brightly coloured tour de force with countless scene changes, flying contraptions and all kinds of mythical creatures that still challenge the stage and costume crafts of the major opera houses to their limits today. On the marionette stage, in contrast, hardly any limits are placed on creative fantasy. How, then, will the bold Tamino and his faithful companion, the bird catcher Papageno, succeed in freeing the beautiful Pamina from the clutches of Sarastro? How will the Queen of the Night look in her powerful aria? And will the power of love triumph over the forces of evil? "The Magic Flute" is not only a grand adventure and a delightful comedy, but also an expression of Mozart's deep, spiritual conviction. Religious motifs blend together here with revolutionary notions of the Enlightenment and hidden symbolism of the Masons. This is, quite simply, theater that enchants young and old.
Parallel to his new interpretation of "The Magic Flute" on the stage of the Salzburg State Theatre, artistic director Carl Philip von Maldeghem and his decorator Christian Floeren will unleas grand theater magic on the small stage of the Marionette Theatre.

Reviews
