Faust
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Synopsis
The Salzburg State Theatre celebrates its 125th anniversary this year and to mark this special occasion we once again present Carl Philip von Maldeghem’s much-praised production of “Faust”.
Goethe (1749–1832) first began working on “Faust” in 1773 and kept preoccupying himself with this popular folk legend almost until his death. Mephistopheles promises to appease Faust’s insatiable hunger for great deeds and great knowledge. Faust takes the bet and wagers his soul. Together they travel the small and the big world and encounter life with all its lures and temptations. Faust is the epitome of restlessness, always striving for knowledge and replacing word with deed. In doing so, he betrays and destroys everything he once treasured: science, his lover, his own child, nature, his future. Is he himself the power that would / always work the evil and always wishes good?
“A thrilling play that takes the audience ‘from heaven through all the world to hell’ in Christian Floeren’s elaborate stage sets. […] Faust navigates the partition of life, which is set up on stage. The black-and-white metaphors running like a common theme through the production are just as unambiguous and intense.” Traunsteiner Tagblatt
