Synopsis

Rossini's turbulent comedy is a parodic game of disguises, deceptions and grotesque productions - and always in the middle of it all: Count Almaviva and his loyal advisor and self-appointed helper in all situations, the barber Figaro. Under the guise of a false identity, Count Almaviva woos his beloved Rosina. The hide-and-seek game is necessary because Rosina's foster father, Dr. Bartolo wants to marry her himself. It's good that the count is assisted by the resourceful barber Figaro, who tries to outdo his rival with ever new disguises and cunning ideas.

Beaumarchais' Figaro trilogy is one of the most important theater texts of the 18th century and inspired the works of numerous composers from Paisiello to Mozart. With energetic music and the self-confident buoyancy of “Italianità” – despite the Spanish setting – Rossini evokes the spirit of Commedia dell’arte with its bizarre characters and insane tempo in this masterpiece. As a master of the crescendo, he continually pushes the music and the plot to new heights. Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868) composed “Il barbiere di Siviglia” in Rome in 1816 in just a few weeks. The mishaps and riots at the premiere, which are still the subject of legend today, could not prevent the work from quickly becoming an enormous success.

To this day, “Il barbiere di Siviglia” is one of the most performed operas. Giuseppe Verdi praised it as “the most beautiful opera buffa there is”. Rossini's lively comedy is directed by Austrian actor Gregor Bloéb, who is directing at the Landestheater for the first time. The new first conductor Carlo Benedetto Cimento celebrates his debut at the house with the fast-paced opera. The set duo Laura Malmberg and Paul Sturminger are working with Bloéb again after a highly acclaimed “Magic Flute” at the Tyrolean State Theater.

Der Dirigent wusste aber auch Zäsuren zu setzen und den Sängern eine feingewebte lyrische Unterlage zu bereiten. Musikalischer Genuss aus dem Orchestergraben war sicher. [...] Das junge, bewegliche Ensemble setzte mit großer Spielfreude und viel Elan die Handlung […]um, zeigte sich witzig, virtuos und italienisch textfreundlich. Singende Schauspieler lieferten hier ein überzeugendes munteres Spielszenario.

Schauspieler Gregor Bloéb hat in seiner zweiten Arbeit als Opernregisseur das Stück in die Nähe der Commedia dell‘arte gerückt – ein durchaus reizvoller Ansatz. […] Der neue Kapellmeister entlockt dem Mozarteumorchester ein federndes, vielgestaltiges Spiel und spitzt den Klang immer wieder entscheidend zu. [...] Man merkt dem Abend an, wie präzise der junge Dirigent aus Bologna mit den Sängerinnen und Sängern gearbeitet hat.
