Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber / Texts by Tim Rice
In German / 8+
Synopsis
It’s not exactly a dusty bible story, but rather (masked by the title) Andrew Lloyd Webber’s liveliest musical. Joseph is something special: He is blessed with prophetic dreams. Out of jealousy towards their Father’s favourite son, his eleven brothers sold him as a slave into Egypt. Yet Joseph met every challenge and because of his abilities was finally nominated Pharaoh’s deputy. Unrecognised, he later met his brothers who were starving and begging for food at his feet. Once Joseph had tested them, he forgave them and the family were united once more.
The Old Testament story is told by the choirs of the Salzburg Festpiele and Children’s Theatre as a rousing Musical, blending Country Folksong, Rock’n’Roll and Chanson with homage to well-known musicians such as Harry Belafonte and Elvis Presley. A story about the power of dreams, joie de vivre, and optimism revealed in a winking moment of verbal wordplay.
Andrew Lloyd Webber (* 1948) and Tim Rice (* 1944) created as a team two further musical hits: »Jesus Christ Super Star« and »Evita«. With »Cats«, »Starlight Express«, and »The Phantom of the Opera« Webber became the most successful musical composer of modern times. Tim Rice received, amongst other awards, the Oscar for »The Lion King«.
The stars of the production became members of the Salzburg Festspiele and the Children’s Choir came under the musical direction of Wolfgang Götz.
