King A

Inèz Derksen

In German / 10+

Premiere: 04/26/2017

Synopsis

To be a knight? Of course! Who doesn’t dream of being a hero? Arthur must ask himself what this question really means as he pulls the sword out of the rock and straight away becomes King of all the knights. A “real’’ knight is afraid of nothing and fights all injustices. Or may be not? And yet Arthur develops a greater vision: of a circle in which no one is better than anyone else and decisions about the future of the land are made together: the Round Table. Each one has equal rights. There is even a lady knight and the King sits as an equal among equals.  They discussed women’s rights, the general welfare of all, and education. Yet Arthur’s brother Kai questioned everything as he preferred to fight. But the heart does not allow itself to be ruled by laws...

Inèz Derksens’ play re-creates the great legend of King Arthur and the Round Table and defines true knighthood as »the art, despite all obstacles and resistance, of staying true to one’s ideals and dreams«. A message which is still valid today: A better world can only be made possible by having the courage to fail. A thrilling play, a great story, funny and thought provoking, romantic and fast moving.

Since 1995 Inèz Derksen (*1967) produced mostly family plays for children over 8 years old in the Netherlands and Germany. In 2007 she took over the artistic management of the Child and Youth Theatre Het Laagland, where »King A«, which in 2002 she developed together with co-authors, had its première under her direction. Since then the play has been successfully and excellently performed in many theatres.

In 1998 the direction team Rachel Karafistan and Kuba Pierzchalski founded the English-Polish Theatregroup COSmino. Rachel Karafistan is director, actress, as well as lecturer at the University of Leeds and elsewhere. Kuba Pierzchalski, as producer, actor, and lecturer in physical theatre since 2005 has performed as Blue Man of the Blue Man Group. Together they perform the piece whilst combining it with a poetic-musical concept.

Reviews

„Viel Musik, Gesang und Rhythmus sorgen für ein aufregendes und zugleich poetisches Theatererlebnis, das viele Themen berührt, doch vor allem zeigt, wie wichtig es ist, seinem Weg zu folgen – und dass es menschlich ist, Fehler zu machen und aus ihnen zu lernen.“
