La finta giardiniera

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Die Gärtnerin aus Liebe / Dramma giocoso

Libretto for the Italian version attributed to Giuseppe Petrosellini / German Singspiel version by Johann Franz Joseph Stierle / In Italian with German dialogue, German and English surtitles

Premiere 10. Dezember 2022 / Landestheater

Synopsis

Love, jealousy, deceit and madness: The house of the Podestà of Lagonero is abuzz. Fleeing from Count Belfiore, her lover who has tried to stab her, Countess Violante Onesti is hiding in the household of the Podestà Don Anchise. Disguised as a gardener, she now calls herself Sandrina. While Violante is annoyed that the head of the household is making advances at her, the Podestà’s niece Arminda is longing for the arrival of her fiancé, whose identity is as yet unknown. When the mysterious future groom turns out to be Count Belfiore, the situation threatens to escalate…

Chaotic relationships pervade this early work by Mozart. Secret, undetected, unrequited, unwanted and unspoken love stories are bubbling below the seemingly well-organised surface of the estate, waiting to erupt.

The composer, who was only 18 years old when he created the work, captures emotions and characters in all their many facets through his music in an incomparable manner. Mozart effortlessly combines comic and tragic opera elements and even in this early work unfolds his full dramatic skills.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) composed “La finta giardiniera” for the Munich carnival season of 1775. When Mozart was still alive, Johann Franz Joseph Stierle adapted the opera for a singspiel with German dialogue, authorised by the composer. The Salzburg State Theatre presents this extraordinary early work in a performance that combines both versions.

Actress Dörte Lyssewski, an ensemble member of the Vienna Burgtheater, has for instance had engagements at the Berliner Schaubühne under the direction of Peter Stein and the Schauspiel Zürich and is also active as a writer and voice actor. At the Salzburg State Theatre she gave her debut as a director with “Der neue Menoza” in 2021 and is now staging her first opera. The Salzburg State Theatre’s Principal Conductor Gabriel Venzago acts as musical director.

Reviews
