Mindcraft

Musical based on a book by Carolin Anna Pichler in a dialogue version by Sarah Henker / Music by Carolin Anna Pichler, as well as Kate Watson and Wolfgang Götz with the support of AI

Ages 10 and up

World premiere: 05/10/2025, Salzburg State Theatre

Synopsis

A game so secret that not even the CIA can get in? Becky, Lara, Chris, and Nick are immediately curious. The four teenagers only know each other from the internet and have developed a friendship through gaming together. Although they live miles apart, they regularly meet in the evenings to play games and are familiar with each other's everyday problems.

The four teenagers, with their cool, individual avatars – Asami, Duality, No Face, and Optimus – master the first levels of the mysterious game with ease. But then complications arise and a fateful glitch occurs: the four teenagers suddenly find themselves part of the game. The levels and challenges become harder and more personal. But only by mastering them can they escape virtual reality. In the musical "Mindcraft," specially developed for the Salzburg State Theater, four completely ordinary teenagers experience the game of their lives and realize that reality and the virtual world are already more closely intertwined than they imagined. In addition to professionals from the Salzburg State Theater and members of the Salzburg Festival and Theater Children's Choir, several young performers from the greater Salzburg area will also take the stage to demonstrate the power of computer games, beats, dance moves, and friendship.

Based on a book by house composer Carolin Anna Pichler, the musical was developed with dialogue by Sarah Henker and music by Carolin Anna Pichler ,as well as Kate Watson and Wolfgang Götz using AI-support, as a commission for the ensemble and the Theatre Children's Choir.

With his productions of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “Peter Pan”, Carl Philip von Maldeghem has shown that his distinct artistic style suits young and adult tastes alike. Designer Vanessa Habib will furnish a futuristic stage and matching costumes.

Duration: 1h 40 min / one break

Reviews

"As the first German-language musical, the piece was composed using artificial intelligence. A brilliant move, especially since AI is also present in the storyline."

Salzburger Nachrichten

"Whether it's the dance crew or the choir, the youthful solo voices or the performances of the avatars, everything comes together harmoniously to create a shared experience."
