Synopsis

Giving societal issues a stage is one of the core missions of the Salzburg State Theatre. In cooperation with the Salzburger Nachrichten, a panel discussion on the structural challenges of Salzburg’s healthcare system will take place on 29 January 2026 at 6:00 p.m. Rising costs, staff shortages—how can healthcare provision be sustained?

Provincial Councillor Mag. Daniela Gutschi and Provincial Councillor Mag. Dr. Wolfgang Fürweger will discuss political and medical responsibility within the context of a healthcare system under pressure. Further panelists include Dr. Reinhard Bittner, Deputy Chair of the Section of Employed Physicians at the University Hospital Salzburg (SALK) and member of the Salzburg Medical Association; Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Voelckel, Medical Director of the Accident Hospital; and Irene Mössler, Deputy Director of Nursing at the University Hospital of the Salzburg State Hospitals. The discussion will be moderated by Marco Riebler, Head of Local News at the Salzburger Nachrichten.

The theatre production “Triage” by Maya Arad Yasur sheds a powerful light on the harsh realities faced by those confronted with the darker sides of their vocation. It explores the tension between personal responsibility, overload, and the moral dilemmas of doctors and nursing staff and is currently being performed at the Salzburg State Theatre.
