Shakespeare im Park: Golden Lads & Girls

William Shakespeare

In cooperation with Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron and Paracelsus Bad & Kurhaus Salzburg

Synopsis

Shakespeare in the Park: 23 August 2022 / Schloss Leopoldskron

In “Cymbeline”, Shakespeare writes a melancholy memento for all the “Golden Lads & Girls”. Despite the splendour and manifold colours of life, love and lust, everything must “come to dust” one day, as the poet laments. The storms of life are familiar not only to Viola, the heroine of “Twelfth Night”, who is shipwrecked in a foreign land and disguises herself as a man (with whom beautiful Olivia instantly falls in love). The young lovers “Troilus and Cressida” must also weather many a storm and the same is true of all heroes and heroines who are cast into ever greater confusion. Once more, the park of Schloss Leopoldskron becomes the setting for a play that is from the pen of Shakespeare, even though the Bard himself never wrote it like that.

Shakespeare in the Pool: 9 September 2022 / Paracelsus Bad

For two extraordinary performances of the production “Lads & Girls”, the public swimming facility Paracelsus Bad becomes the stage for the trials and tribulations of Shakespeare’s characters. The audience is invited to watch the performance in and around the pools.

We are well acquainted with the Paracelsus Bad venue as a photo location, since this is where all the pictures for our season programme were taken. It was during the photo shoots that an employee of the facility asked us about the possibility of holding a theatre performance in a pool setting. “Shakespeare in the Pool” promises a theatre experience that defies all expectations.

“Dazed by the beauty of the moment, the audience could not get enough of the plethora of Shakespeare scenes […]. Even though Shakespeare never wrote this play, he would have presumably enjoyed this best-of version of his works just as much as the ‘enraptured’ audience.” Traunsteiner Tagblatt

With great relish, the Salzburg State Theatre has for years been following Max Reinhardt’s idea of “turning the city into a stage”. In addition to the Shakespeare walk in the park of Schloss Leopoldskron, we will make an excursion to the Paracelsus Bad pools this year. Please remember to bring solid shoes for the one Shakespeare experience – and rubber sandals for the other!
