Shakespeare im Park: Love Songs

In the first instalment of Shakespeare in the Park, “Lovers and Fools” would confess their passionate love for each other, unleash raging jealousy and display the terrible confusion of their emotions in the park of Schloss Leopoldskron. They were followed by scheming, back-stabbing and greedy “Queens and Kings” with murderous intentions, who hid behind shrubs and bushes and poisoned each other with words and cups of hemlock.

By now, the Shakespearean summer strolls have become a tradition for the audience, the theatre ensemble and the palace staff. We recommend solid shoes and picnic baskets (and an occasional glance at the sky to make sure the weather gods are playing along). When Shakespeare’s characters display excessive emotions, the Bard sends them into the woods – and in Max Reinhardt’s haunted park they find a truly wonderful stage to bare the depths of their souls, which are full of poetry, love, lust for power and murder as well as rich obscenities.
