Synopsis
“Singin’ in the Rain” is a loving tribute to the genre of musicals. The Hollywood version with its spectacular dance scenes is now one of the best-known films in history and regularly ranks in top ten lists of the best movies of all times. It is the golden age of Hollywood: Crowds of fans are lining the red carpets in the hope of finally seeing their heroes from the silver screen up close. The tabloids are full of stories about stars and starlets. But behind the scenes of the dream factory, all that glitters is not gold. Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are the biggest silent-movie stars of their time and the king and queen of movies. Off the screen, however, Lockwood has no romantic feelings whatsoever for his co-star. One night, as Don is trying to escape from a group of intrusive fans, he meets the young actress Kathy Selden, to whom he is instantly attracted. But Don’s career takes a blow when a technical innovation rocks the foundations of the movie industry – talkies. The problem: Lina’s voice is hardly fit to charm a large audience. Luckily, Kathy Selden has a great speaking voice and is a very talented singer. The 1952 musical film “Singin’ in the Rain” celebrates Hollywood in the 1920s and 1930s. Most of the music by Nacio Herb Brown (1896–1964) and Arthur Freed (1894–1973) was composed during that era. It was woven into a plot by Betty Comden and Adolph Green that perfectly captures the spirit of Tinseltown. Simon Eichenberger has repeatedly won the German music theatre award Deutscher Musicalpreis. Dancer Dominique Brooks-Daw will choreograph the famous dance scenes for the stage. Tobias Meichsner, the newly appointed Second Kapellmeister of the Salzburg State Theatre, acts as the play’s musical director. Musical star Ramesh Nair plays Don Lockwood.
Duration: 3 hours (including one intermission)
Reviews
