A work commissioned by the Salzburg State Theatre in collaboration with the tourism association of Saalbach Hinterglemm, SalzburgerLand Tourismus and Schmidts TIVOLI Theater Hamburg.

A charming new musical puts on its skis to take audiences on a tour of the many facets of one of Austria’s greatest passions: skiing. The Ski World Cup 2025 in the state of Salzburg, hereditary Austrian hospitality and the pressure to perform experienced by professional ski athletes are the ingredients for the musical “Skiverliebt” (“Love to Ski”).

The plot centres on the Austrian ski racer Anna. She travels the world and excels at her sport every day: Anna is the greatest star on the skiing scene. When it is announced that the Ski World Cup will be held in her hometown, however, Anna’s emotions run high. Matters are complicated further by her boyfriend Franz (a skiing instructor), the brazen journalist Hanna from Hamburg (who can’t get used to the cold), Joe (the World Cup’s head organizer), Camilla (a top skier from Brazil) and Leopold (a melancholy snowcat driver). Also, tourists are everywhere, with visitors leaving and new guests arriving each Saturday. Thank God Jessica’s hotel serves the best Kaiserschmarrn in the world – the ultimate comfort food!

The ski resort of Saalbach-Hinterglemm, venue of the 2025 Ski World Cup, provides the setting and inspiration for the musical with its dedication to skiing, its beautiful landscape and its busy tourism industry. The commissioned work explains why “all you need is snow” and aims to become the greatest Austrian winter musical (just like “Im weißen Rössl” is the most famous Austrian summer operetta). Martin Lingnau’s music, arranged for a full orchestra, blends Austropop, waltzing bliss, aprés-ski songs and other catchy tunes.

Martin Lingnau is one of the most successful composers in German-speaking countries. Salzburg audiences have enjoyed his compositions in the musical “Der Schuh des Manitu”. Lyricist Frank Ramond has worked with Barbara Schöneberger, Annett Louisan and Udo Lindenberg. The book was developed by Austrian author Anna Lukasser-Weitlaner, who grew up in the winter sports paradise of East Tyrol. Johannes Glück is responsible for the dialog. In 2018, he wrote the translation of the lyrics for the authorized German version of "Kick It Like Beckham" for the Salzburger Landestheater and in summer 2024 he wrote the new dialogue version of "My Fair Lady" for the Seefestspiele Mörbisch.
