Heritage Day

The Secret of the Iron Curtain

September 28, 2025

Synopsis

Throughout Austria, the doors of historic sites open on Heritage Day. As a house rich in tradition and history, the Salzburg State Theatre today represents theatre at the cutting edge, aiming to reach all culture enthusiasts with its work.

In 2022, one of the largest renovations at the Salzburg State Theatre was completed, involving fundamental and extensive updates to the auditorium and stage technology. A key focus was restoring the auditorium to its original architectural concept: gilded stuccoes were uncovered, the ceiling fresco was cleaned and refreshed, and the wall coverings were renewed.

Hans Joachim Erxleben, longtime chief stage manager at the Salzburg State Theatre, enriches his tours with anecdotes and expert knowledge, entertainingly and passionately sharing insights into the past and present of this leading performing arts institution in the city and region of Salzburg.

Registration: Free admission tickets are available via our online shop and at the box office. A maximum of 30 participants per tour.

The Heritage Day delights thousands of visitors every year. It is Austria’s contribution to the European Heritage Days, established in 1991 on the initiative of the Council of Europe with the support of the European Union. The aim of the European Heritage Days is to deepen awareness of the diversity and value of cultural heritage. This year’s Day of Monuments takes place under the motto: “Preserving heritage, experiencing it digitally."

In keeping with this year’s theme, the Young Land division offers you a glimpse behind the scenes, guiding you on a digital tour through the rehearsal rooms and workshops of the Salzburg Landestheater.
