Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – Family Performance
Richard M. Sherman und Robert B. Sherman
Adapted for the stage by Jeremy Sams and Ray Roderick · based on the MGM film of the same name · German translation by Frank Thannhäuser
Synopsis
“Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” is a fantastic musical filled with adventure, humour and emotions that is based on the eponymous 1968 British musical fantasy film. It centres on the eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts, who saves a derelict racing car together with his two children. With much love and inventiveness, the rust bucket is turned into a very special car: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang can not only drive but also swim and even fly. Together with the kind Truly Scrumptious, the family embarks on an adventurous journey that takes them all the way to the strange kingdom of Vulgaria. There, they must stand up to the sinister Baron Bomburst, who despises children – and that is the greatest danger of all …
The story is based on a children’s novel by “James Bond” creator Ian Fleming and achieved global fame as a movie in 1968. The catchy songs by the Sherman Brothers – including the title song “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” – have made the film unforgettable to this day.
In the stage adaptation of the early 2000s, the work captures young and adult audiences alike. It combines abundant fantasy with a clear message: courage, solidarity and a little craziness can make the world a better place.
Based on Ian Fleming’s book, the musical film of the same name with music by the Sherman brothers was a worldwide success in 1968. The two composers had previously provided the music for Disney’s “The Jungle Book” and “Mary Poppins”. They won an Academy Award and received two Golden Globe nominations for the score to “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”. Their musical has been charming international theatre audiences since 2002.
Lara Roth studied literature and dramatics and has a diploma in dance education and choreography. She has choreographed “Xanadu” and directed “Malala”, and together with Carl Philip von Maldeghem, she has staged “The Neverending Story” in Bamberg.
