Vicky the viking

Runer Jonsson

Ages 6 and up

Adapted for the stage by Christina Piegger / Music by Katrin Schweiger

Austrian premiere: 13 May 2023 / Salzburg State Theatre

A true Viking is strong, brave and wild. He knows no fear and navigates the sea to conquer foreign lands, board enemy ships and return victorious with sacks full of gold and silver. But Vicky, whose father is the chief of the Viking village of Flake, is not interested in all these things. Unlike the ostensibly strong men in his village, Vicky prefers thinking to fighting. His father Halvar, the strongest and manliest Viking of all, doesn’t know what to make of that. Is his own son really a coward?

But the tide turns when Vicky beats his father in a contest. Determined to make a man out of him, his father orders Vicky to join him and his men on their ship. Together with the tough Vikings, Vicky embarks on a wild adventure. But who will end up helping whom …?

Vicky is a timeless anti-hero, widely known and loved for decades, who teaches us that some situations require brains rather than brawn. Staged as an adventurous Viking odyssey with catchy tunes and audience-participation choreographies, “Vicky the Viking” attacks common cliches.

Runer Jonsson’s (1916–2006) iconic character Vicky has encouraged children around the world to be themselves. The highly popular stories about Vicky are well-known from books, films and the animated TV series. A recent live-action movie won the “Goldene Leinwand” award in recognition of its commercial success. This is the first time that “Vicky the Viking” is presented as a theatrical play in Austria.

Christina Piegger has demonstrated her infallible instincts as a director of plays for this age group with “The Little Vampire” in the 2019/2020 season. Stage and costume designer Matthias Kronfuß will bring the seafaring adventure to life. Her playful designs have mesmerised young audiences at the Salzburg State Theatre in productions such as “Meister Eder und sein Pumuckl - Das Winterfest”.
